‘Yukiwarisou’ is a lovingly restored 150 year old traditional farmhouse located in ‘Irori no Sato’, a tiny village of 11 homes located in northern Nagano at 800m above sea level at the foot of the towering North Alps.

Yukiwarisou is enjoyable to visit in any season and is open all year round.

The village is surrounded by rice fields and vegetable patches, and beyond them are wonderful mixed deciduous and pine forests with fresh green shoots in spring and blazes of yellows and reds in autumn. In winter the village is buried under meters of snow, and is just minutes away from some terrific ski runs.

The village of Irori no Sato owns and manages ‘Yukiwarisou’ and uses it as a place for visitors to come and stay and experience mountain village life.

The house regularly hosts events where visitors come to experience various aspects of village life with the members of the village. Such experiences include, collecting wild mountain vegetables in spring, harvesting mini-tomatoes in summer, making pickles and dumplings from local vegetables in autumn, harvesting cabbages from under the snow in winter and making and cooking ‘oyaki’ a local dumpling and making straw sandals at any time of year. Also, in winter they run 2 day workshops on making straw bedding for dogs and cats.

Yukiwarisou can sleep up to 8 guests but the whole house has to be booked by the same group or family as the rooms and bathroom are all shared. In winter the whole house can be booked for Yen70,000 per night and the rest of the year the cost per person, including breakfast and dinner prepared by the women of the village, is Yen 9,800.

Yukiwarisou is a 5 minute drive and 15 minute walk from JR Minami Otari Station on the JT Oito Line and 70 minutes by bus from Nagano City.
